Creative Writing
I’ve always loved reading. My earliest memories of storytelling or creating stories was as a child playing pretend with my Barbies. I was the youngest, a sort of only child, of four adult siblings. Storytelling was a form of escape and a way for me to have control in a life where I felt trapped and powerless. I wrote my first short story in my fourth grade English class and began chronicling my life and feelings in journals that I continue to this day.
I write semi-autobiographical poetry and short fiction that explores family dynamics, relationships, mental health, other worlds, and magic.
My writing style is a visual based literary style. I am greatly influenced by film and television. I want readers to experience my story the way they experience film, through scenes, sounds, colors, and atmosphere. I’m also influenced by folklore and oral storytelling. I often use dialog to immerse the reader and develop the story’s characters. So all this is combined to make my story, characters, and dialog very casual and relatable. Like my artwork, my creative writing is very narrative driven, especially through dialog, self-reflection, and scene setting. I like to employ humor in the mundane, often dry, sarcastic, a little dark, and sometimes ridiculous.
